behind the scenes:

meet our artisans & see the impact behind the Winter 2025 Jilly Box feature

a story of craftsmanship, community impact, and our biggest project yet

as a brand that typically releases small-batch collections once a year, producing 20,000 margo cuffs for The Winter 2025 Jilly Box was a challenge unlike anything we’d taken on before. but we believed deeply in the impact this project could create — more work, more stability, more opportunity for the artisans we partner with. that belief is what pushed us to say yes to something far beyond our usual scale, and it became one of the most rewarding decisions we’ve ever made.

this project began with two clear intentions:

to hire more female artisans within our partner community, and to stay true to our values by sourcing every material locally — supporting a cleaner environment and a more sustainable local economy. those goals guided every decision we made, from production methods to the way we scaled.

a glimpse into the impact...

monica's impact: "i've cleared my rent, school fees for high school. i'm now also saving some funds."

lillian's impact: "i'm now finishing my villlage house and also i've cleared college fees for my two girls."

regina's impact: "i've purchased a parcel of land for my village home and next is to start building."

where the story begins

our margo cuff bracelet was a perfect piece for The Winter 2025 Jilly Box — a timeless piece with a vintage-inspired aesthetic. designed in canada and handmade by master artisans in kibera, it carries a story rooted in creativity and resilience. kibera, home to roughly 250,000 people, is one of the world’s largest informal settlements — a place that faces challenges like high unemployment and limited infrastructure, yet remains defined by innovation, artistry, and community. our artisans are at the heart of that spirit.

materials that matter

every margo cuff was made using locally salvaged scrap metals, collected from around the city, then melted down, hammered, shaped, and 18kt gold plated. brass is infinitely recyclable, which means each piece carries a sustainability story — giving new life to materials that already existed and supporting a cleaner, more circular local economy.

the impact of 20,000 pieces

scaling to 20,000 units created real, measurable change.

we were able to hire 26 artisans — 16 women and 10 men — in a community where unemployment is over 50%. hiring more women was a core goal, and seeing women step into these roles with pride and confidence has been one of the most meaningful parts of this journey.

the steady work allowed artisans to invest in what mattered most to them: building or improving their homes, paying for school fees, purchasing land, covering daily essentials, and planning for their futures with more stability.

income circulated directly within the community — supporting families, strengthening local businesses, and contributing to a cleaner environment through the use of upcycled materials.

this wasn’t just production. it was opportunity, dignity, and momentum.

a project we’ll never forget

the margo cuff is more than a piece of jewellery. it represents the creativity and skill of the artisans who brought it to life, the community it helped uplift, and the shared belief that beautiful design can create meaningful change.

we’re endlessly proud of what we built together — and grateful to share this story with you!
